Название горного Озера Искандеркуль истекает от имени Александра Македонского, которого в Таджикистане и странах Центральной Азии, Ирана и Афганистана (на Востоке) называют Искандари Зулкарнайн (Искандер двурогий). Слово «куль» (от таджикского языка – кӯл) означает «озеро», так название «Искандаркул» или «Искандеркуль» исходить от этих двух отдельных слов Икандар+Кул. Обоснованность данного определения имеет исторический характер; когда Александр Македонский, завоевав сообществ приходить в Центральной Азии, он проходить именно через этого горного озера и остается там на время, затем из Центральной Азии в Индии.
Озеро расположено на высоте 2195 метров над уровнем моря, в отрогах горного узла Кухистан, между западными оконечностями Гиссарского и Зерафшанского хребтов.
Общая площадь водной поверхности озера составляет 3,4 км², глубина озера достигает 72 метров. Согласно аналитическим материалам, в прошлом, озеро имело относительно высокий уровень воды, следы которого можно заметить на склонах окружающих гор, на высоте более 120 метров.
